The Communications and Public Affairs team elevates AIR’s expertise in assessment, research, evaluation, and technical assistance to tell the AIR story to key audiences including staff, policymakers, clients, and the media.
The Director of Internal and Executive Communications will develop and lead the implementation of an internal communications strategy, and tactical plan, that tells the AIR narrative internally while fostering employee engagement across the Assessment, Professional Services and Infrastructure divisions of AIR. S/he will serve as a trusted advisor and consultant to AIR’s senior executive leadership and will manage and improve AIR’s systems and processes for staff communications, including the company's intranet site, email communications and town hall meetings. Additionally, this leader will partner closely with the AIR Human Resources team to deliver effective communications around people-focused initiatives. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs, the Director will manage a team of three direct reports.


• Develop, drive and lead an enterprise-wide strategy for internal communications that is aligned with AIR’s culture and values, reinforces the AIR brand, and provides a cadence of clear, timely, effective communications.
• Provide advice and counsel regarding internal communications to senior executives of the Assessment, Professional Services and Infrastructure divisions.
• Partner closely with Human Resources to develop and lead communications strategies to address employee engagement.
• Evaluate existing internal communications channels, and apply those insights towards the development of new and enhanced alternatives.
• Provide continuity in the voice and visual branding of internal communications deliverables, ensuring a cohesive look and feel as well as a strategic purpose.
• Manage, inspire, develop and retain a group of communications professionals.
• Create effective, consistent and timely AIR-wide internal messages.
• Work across the Communications and Public Affairs team to ensure that internal and external outreach activities are synchronized and mutually beneficial.
• Develop and implement appropriate metrics to monitor the success and impact of internal communications strategies so as to continuously improve communications and messages, take the pulse of AIR’s staff, and keep AIR leadership informed.


• Bachelor’s degree in communications, human resources, or similar liberal arts major required (journalism, corporate affairs, marketing/PR, etc.); advanced degree strongly preferred.
• Minimum 15 years of experience in communications/corporate communications (e.g., supporting corporate functions in Human Resources, Finance, Operations, IT, or similar) in a complex organization with geographically dispersed diverse staff.
• Minimum 5 years of experience leading an internal communications function and managing individual contributors or direct reports.
• Demonstrated experience in providing direct support to senior executives, specifically partnering with them to address change management communications and/or issues communications.
• Experience with developing and implementing results-driven internal communications strategies that align with business goals and objectives and measuring their effectiveness. Proven ability to manage complex projects involving multiple stakeholders.
• Excellent writing skills are a must, writing samples should be made available upon request.
• Proven ability to research, write, edit, and proofread internal communications (including talking points, intranet stories, PowerPoint presentations, and emails).
• Strong and demonstrated organizational skills with high level of attention to detail.
• Experience and comfort working in a fast-paced environment where decisions must be made and work done in real-time while planning for longer-lead assignments.
• Demonstrated interpersonal, networking, negotiation, and influencing skills. Proven teamwork and collaboration skills.
• Experience with internal communications platforms, software, and graphic design programs, such as SharePoint, Yammer, Adobe, etc.

• Internal communications processes and channels are aligned and upgraded to support a seamless, company-wide employee communications and engagement strategy.
• AIR Human Resources is fully supported as a key business partner with regard to benefit, culture, and agile staff messaging and communication.
• Senior executives are fully engaged and supported in broad and effective employee communication strategies.
• Establishment of an internal communications infrastructure that provides a continuous feedback loop for staff and senior leadership.
