Overview

The American Institutes for Research (AIR) Health Services Practice Area specializes in research, evaluation, and technical assistance in the areas of patient and consumer engagement, evaluation, quality and performance measurement, delivery systems improvement, financing and cost of care, and behavioral health (i.e., substance abuse and mental health). Major clients include the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), private foundations, and state governments.

AIR is currently seeking a Health Policy Researcher with mixed-methods expertise to join our team in one of our main offices: Washington, DC, Rockville, MD, Chapel Hill, NC, or San Mateo, CA.

Responsibilities

The Researcher will work on projects related to consumer and stakeholder engagement, quality reporting and measurement, research and evaluation of health policies and programs . Specifically, the Researcher will:
1. Provide technical leadership of research or technical assistance projects, including developing research designs and strategic audience-focused project plans, providing strategic thinking, leading and supporting stakeholder work, conducting analyses of qualitative or quantitative data, and identifying creative solutions to address client needs.
2. Lead research and technical assistance tasks on projects, including literature searches, qualitative data collection and analysis (from focus groups, interviews), and technical report preparation.
3. Lead development of plain language materials for consumers and clinicians and interventions that engage patients and families in research and health care delivery.
4. Manage budgets and timelines for projects and tasks effectively
5. Contribute to dissemination activities, including presentations, conference posters, issue briefs, technical reports, and manuscripts for a variety of audiences.
6. Engage in business development activities, including, cultivating relationships with existing and potential new clients, managing or writing proposals, developing budgets, and expanding AIR Health’s areas of expertise.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. degree with 0-3 years related experience or M.A., M.S., or M.P.H. or equivalent degree with 3-5 years related experience in health services research (health policy, patient engagement, measurement, health behavior, health care), social science (psychology, sociology), evaluation research, or public health required.
• Experience in mixed methods research, with experience using analytic software (e.g., NVivo).
Experience in multiple forms of qualitative data collection, including interviews, focus groups, and site visits.
• In addition to technical expertise, candidates should have demonstrated management skills, including the ability to lead small and medium sized tasks and proposals, work on teams under the leadership of other staff, provide day-to-day management of complex projects and tasks, and direct and mentor staff members.
• Experience working in a grant or contract-funded environment highly desirable.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills.
• Flexibility and ability to consistently meet deadlines.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Acute attention to detail and strong work ethic.
