Overview

American Institutes for Research (AIR) is a leading non-profit organization with more than 1,800 staff members dedicated to our mission of conducting and applying the best behavioral and social science research and evaluation towards improving people’s lives, with a special emphasis on the disadvantaged. The Communications and Public Affairs team, working with AIR’s expertise in assessment, research, evaluation, and technical assistance tells the AIR story to key audiences including funders, policymakers, the media, and AIR staff.
The Senior Writer supports the planning, creation, and production of AIR content, in print and online, across multiple channels. The emphasis will be on blogs, briefs, and other thought leadership pieces. This is a part-time position reporting to the Director of Communications Operations.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with experts—from concept to finished product—to write blog posts, policy briefs, success stories, and other print and web-based materials.
• Ensure that each product has an explicit focus, strong structure, and is written in a clear, easily understood, non-academic style
• Ensure that all content – including headlines, graphics, and sidebars—meets AIR’s rigorous quality assurance standards.
• Identify and recruit appropriate staff as information sources and interview subjects
• Set and meet deadlines and support the Editor/Content Lead in maintaining the flow of written products.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, journalism, or related field; master’s degree preferred
• At least 6 years’ relevant work experience with advanced editing, writing, and proofreading skills, preferably at a large nonprofit organization or
• Demonstrated ability to write and edit content for multiple audiences
• Familiarity with AP and APA style
• Extremely detail-oriented; must possess superior organizational and time-management skills
• Ability to work efficiently and maintain a high level of productivity and quality, independently and as part of a team; to communicate regularly; balance multiple priorities; and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, team-focused environment
• Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
