The Assessment Program at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) is a well-regarded organization that is growing rapidly. We focus on providing our clients with customized assessments that not only measure student achievement against state standards, but also provide meaningful score reports that can help students, parents, and educators address any areas of student weakness. Our environment is fast-paced and requires people at all levels who are willing to roll up their sleeves to get the work done on time while maintaining high quality.

We are currently seeking an Education Assessment Editor for our Washington, D.C. office.


The Assessment Editor will work with other editors and Operations/Production staff and will collaborate with internal and external clients by copy editing and proofreading educational testing materials to ensure correct grammar, sentence structure, and overall clarity and cohesion. Assessment editors adhere strictly to various style manuals including Chicago, AP, and APA, as well as various state departments of education publishing requirements and client-specific style rules. Qualified candidates are expected to have superb organizational skills and the ability to prioritize projects and editing requests under high-pressure daily deadlines. Editors participate in business development and proposal preparation efforts and must exercise excellent diplomatic skills in working with content-development writers, production staff, project leaders, and contract managers.


• Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, or a related field
• Minimum of 4 years of editing experience in a professional publishing environment
• Successful candidates will demonstrate an exceptional command of the English language
• Strong listening, writing, and oral communication skills
• Expertise and experience in creating, revising, and editing a wide variety of documents (e.g., official correspondence, online content, technical reports, proposals, and K-12 testing materials) are desirable
• Familiarity with educational terminology and formats and assessment experience is preferred
• Must have a thorough knowledge of standard proofreading symbols.
• Must be proficient in Word and have experience using "Track Changes"
• Work experience in PowerPoint and Excel is preferable
• Flexibility and ability to work additional hours are needed and expected during peak times
