In 2015 The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was passed and reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. The candidate for this position will be responsible for managing outreach and business development, as well as activities to inform the development and delivery of AIR’s ESSA related services to existing and new clients such as State educational agencies (SEAs), local school districts, schools and works to coordinate outreach activities between program staff and the strategy office team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the structure and requirements of the new legislation. In addition to the timing of implementation, impact and opportunities for federal, state and local communities. The candidate will possess experience working in and have current relationships with SEAs, national education and intergovernmental organizations. Candidate will also have experience working in a professional service organization and a demonstrated track record in project management, business development and collaborating with clients and internal colleagues on project design and development.
• Plans and executes external communications activities such as high visibility events and written resources for national dissemination. • Utilizes existing relationships and shares responsibility with other AIR teams (strategy office, practice areas, service areas) in managing external outreach. • Travels regularly to partner and client sites and meetings to assess evolving needs in the field and to maintain and develop relationships. • Provides support and shares responsibility in maintaining relationships with strategic partners, national governance and state based organizations. Identifies and develops additional strategic partnerships. • Identifies, plans, coordinates, and attends national conferences and key state conferences, including managing and reporting on follow up activities. • Develops and delivers briefs, blogs, presentations, resource documents for staff and senior leaders in the organization. • Identifies and cultivates relationships with current and potential funders and develops business opportunities for education related projects. Internal:
• Leads AIR’s ESSA working group and activities as well as manages budget to ensure the activities are aligned to available resources. • Establishes and maintains relationships with AIR teams engaged in education related activities and serves as a resource to keep staff informed of ESSA-related developments. Works closely with teams to develop ideas into new services or resources that connect to needs in the field identified through travel in states and participation in meetings and conferences. • Tracks ESSA related activities and outcomes and coordinates periodic reports to leadership and other AIR teams. Monitors ESSA-related lessons learned in the field and with our practice areas. • Supports teams in responding to request for proposals (RFPs) and similar proposal development activities. • Liaison to communications office to coordinate the creation of ESSA-related resources. Maintains AIR’s ESSA Co-Pilot (www.air.org/essa ). • Demonstrates and cultivates expertise in AIR’s content areas, including those areas that extend into health, human services, and workforce in order to represent our work in the field and being able to recognize and capitalize on opportunities that arise. • Works with the Strategy Office in coordinating, supporting and monitoring outreach activities to target states with AIR experts and project managers with work in the state. • Works with the Strategy Office to support the preparation process for state meetings with internal teams that includes preparing briefing packets and supporting leadership in scheduling and preparing for state visits. • Works closely with AIR staff with responsibility for coordinating relationship with foundations.
• Masters Degree in Education or related field is required, doctorate degree preferred. • Experience creating and executing outreach and business development plans and strategies in collaboration with internal teams and external partners. • Demonstrated networking and business development skills. • Experience working in a state education or local education agency or related organization is preferred. • Experience in education research and technical assistance projects at the federal, state, and local levels. • Ability to lead teams and collaborate with leadership and internal teams to move the work forward despite challenges or delays that may arise. • Experience developing materials for high profile meetings and events. • Proficient in Microsoft Office such as Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. • Strong writing skills as well as internal and external communication skills are essential. • Experience in education communications with emphasis on multimedia content development including websites, videos, social media, etc. is desirable.
