The Content Team in our Education Assessment Program is responsible for the creation of all test materials, products, and services for the Assessment Program of the American Institutes for Research (AIR). The Program works with a number of state agencies and consortiums to meet their educational measurement, professional development, and public outreach needs.
The Social Studies Test Developer will work with the rest of the Social Studies Content Team on test development projects across a variety of assessment programs. The position will help select literary and informational passages and artwork for test use; obtain copyright permission as needed; write, review, and revise test items (questions) based on their fairness and content, with the assistance and supervision of senior staff. The position will also resolve team feedback on test items at individual meetings and group review sessions; proofread test materials throughout the development process; update test creation software as directed by senior staff; assist in the recruitment, training, and management of internal and external item writers; contribute to the creation of training materials for item writers; provide planning and logistical support at client committee meeting; assist at client committee meetings in which stakeholders review the fairness and content of test items; assist with the assembly of field test and operational test form; update test forms as directed by senior staff based on client feedback during blackline and blueline review, prior to print; assist at constructed-response scoring activities to help identify exemplar student responses, monitor scorer training, and audit scoring session; assist technical staff at client committee meetings in which stakeholders review statistical data of administered test form; assist senior staff at standard setting; contribute to the creation of ancillary testing materials for interpretive guides, score reports, and item release websites; assist senior staff in the management of test item pools; assist senior staff in the development of new assessments, products, and services.
Qualified applicants will hold at least a Masters degree in History, Social Studies, or a related field. Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience teaching Social Studies (or English) and/or managing Social Studies/History item development functions within an education assessment environment. Strong knowledge and experience with the U.S. Education and Education Assessment system is required. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to identify problems and conceptualize solutions, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines and work collaboratively with others. Required travel for this position ranges from 1 week to 6 weeks per year. Candidates should be able to travel as required for 2-3 days at a time, mostly in the June/July time-frame.
