Researcher: Women’s Collective Specialist in East-Africa (Qualitative)
American Institutes for Research (AIR) is leading a research initiative that aims to strengthen the evidence on the impact and cost-effectiveness of women empowerment collectives (including but not limited to self-help groups, saving groups, and participatory women’s groups) and to provide technical assistance to the gender equality team of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and its evaluation partners. We aim to synthesize existing evidence on women’s empowerment collectives in India and East Africa. This work will provide guidance for future evaluations of women’s empowerment collectives. AIR will closely consult with the gender equality team at BMGF as well as other research partners in the design and implementation of the research.
To support this exciting work, AIR is seeking experts based in East Africa to serve as consultants to contribute to the research on the impact and cost-effectiveness of women’s collectives in East-Africa and to provide guidance to BMGF and its evaluation partners. The consultants will serve as a thought partner for AIR and BMGF. This is a four year part-time consultancy.
• Contribute to our broader analysis of different types of women’s empowerment collectives (including the development of a taxonomy and theories of change) that are implemented in East-Africa and ways in which they operate • Contribute to technical assistance to the gender equality team at BMGF and its evaluation partners using qualitative research skills • Engage with partners and critical stakeholders in East-Africa • Collect primary and secondary data from different interlocutors that will range from implementers, governmental and non-government organizations, as well as participants in women’s collectives • Contribute to the analysis of qualitative data • Regularly communicate with consortium members and report on ongoing work • Co-author papers on the impact and cost-effectiveness of women’s collectives
• Significant expertise in women’s collectives in East-Africa • Significant expertise in women’s empowerment issues in East-Africa • Ph.D. or M.A. in sociology, anthropology, public health or related social sciences (strong preference for Ph.D.) • Extensive skills in carrying out social science research using qualitative methods (e.g. in-depth interviews, focus groups, oral histories, etc.) • Excellent communication and reporting skills • Strong proficiency in English • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint • Strong proficiency in NVivo or a similar qualitative data analysis software • Shows a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion • Preference for East-African nationals but we will consider applications from other applicants based in East-Africa
