AIR’s Human Services Division is seeking Researchers with strong quantitative analysis experience. Researchers will work on multiple projects with a focus on studying the effectiveness of education programs, practices, and policies within the pre-kindergarten (PK) to postsecondary educational systems. Candidates are expected to understand AIR’s organizational objectives and mission and achieve those objectives through their advanced level of technical work and content expertise.  The Researcher positions can be remote or located out of any of the following AIR locations once offices are reopened: Crystal City, VA, Rockville, MD, Austin, TX, Chicago, IL, Chapel Hill, NC, Waltham, MA or Sacramento, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, interpret, and report on complex quantitative data using appropriate statistical and/or psychometric methods (multiple linear regression, HLM, Structural Equation Modeling, IRT, etc.)
  • Design data collection frameworks and/or data crosswalks
  • Lead tasks and projects using rigorous designs such as randomized control trials, regression discontinuity, and quasi-experimental designs with tight controls
  • Contribute substantively, thoughtfully, and creatively to the conceptualization and design of education studies, including research proposals in response to funder requests or for grant competitions
  • Write reports, briefs, proposals and other documents that are clear, concise, thoughtful and contribute substantively to the field
  • Monitor, coordinate, and provide direction to research analysts; providing advice and guidance on appropriate research methods, analysis, and reporting
  • Managing or leading projects or research tasks, with assumption of greater responsibility over time
  • Develop and maintain daily relationships with clients and funders to plan, implement, and present study results while maintaining appropriate professional objectivity
  • Provide direct assistance to clients for analytical or statistical expertise

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in education, economics, sociology, public policy or other related field, or Master’s degree with 4-7 years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of PK to postsecondary education preferred
  • Able to apply advanced statistical methods and communicate effectively about these methods to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Knowledge of methodology used to collect, analyze, and report quantitative data
  • Highly proficient in Stata, R, or other statistical software preferred and open to learning new statistical tools as required by projects
  • Demonstrated proficiencies in writing, conceptualizing, analyzing, and consulting
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to produce concise, high-level summaries and briefings
  • Experience managing the details of research projects and leading small teams preferred
