Overview

Established in 1946, with headquarters in Crystal City, Va, the American Institutes for Research (AIR) is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization that conducts behavioral and social science research on important social issues and delivers technical assistance and capacity building services domestically and internationally in health, social development, education, and workforce to a growing roster of clients and partners.

 

We are seeking a Communication Assistant to join AIR’s Education Systems program area. This position can be located out of any of the following AIR locations once offices are reopened: Crystal City, VA, Rockville, MD, Austin, TX, Chicago, IL, or Chapel Hill, NC.

Responsibilities

 

  • Coordinate the creation of both print- and web-based products focused on education related topics, including working with content experts, editing, production, and design technical staff.
  • Develop content and resources, as well as execute timelines, for external events (public television events, in-person one-day conferences, and webinars).
  • Work collaboratively with researchers and technical assistance providers on the execution of a communications plan that engages education stakeholders.
  • Plan and coordinate multifaceted social media and web content strategy focused on education related topics.
  • Conduct literature reviews regarding various education issues and contribute to proposals for education-related communication activities.
  • Assist with organization and facilitation of observations, focus groups, interviews, and other data collection.
  • Responsible for maintaining and checking the accuracy of data for assigned projects.
  • Assist in developing and drafting proposals with program staff for foundation, corporate, government, and other funding sources.
  • Provides administrative project support to senior management and clientele, where applicable. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in social science and/or communications related fields.
  • Desire to work with people on PreK-12 education issues.
  • Knowledge of education policy is preferred.
  • Experience with managing social media and website strategies and writng for the web is preferred.
  • Must possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiencies in writing, conceptualizing, analyzing, and consulting.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and client-service orientation.
  • Access to travel locally.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Experience managing detailed projects preferred.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. Employment-based visa sponsorship (including H-1B sponsorship) is not available for this position. Depending on project work, qualified candidates may need to meet certain residency requirements.
